You’re mostly right – Yellow buys AdWords from Google and Google buys business listing data from Yellow. If you do a search on Google Maps or the Maps app on iPhone you’ll see “Business listings provided by Finda” – here’s an example:
http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?q=Pasadena+Intermediate,+Point+Chevalier

As well as AdWords, Yellow and Finda are both in the top five organic results for most local queries on Google. All together it’s pretty good value for advertisers, most of whom don’t have the time or knowledge to look after their own SEO or AdWords.
